Distinguished and Famous people from Kingaroy

🏛️ Florence “Flo” Bjelke-Petersen

Florence Bjelke-Petersen moved into the Kingaroy district when she married Joh Bjelke-Petersen in 1952 and made her home at Bethany. Her public life extended well beyond being a premier’s wife: she represented Queensland in the Senate from 1981 to 1993. Earlier employment in the Main Roads Department had given her administrative experience and brought her into contact with local government delegations. The nickname “Flo” became inseparable from her public image, although she preferred Florence. Her Kingaroy association is a long residential and family connection, alongside a political career in her own right.

🌾 Warren Truss

Warren Truss was born in Kingaroy in 1948 and worked as a farmer before entering federal politics. His local government service was substantial: he sat on Kingaroy Shire Council from 1976 to 1990 and chaired it from 1983 to 1990. Elected to the federal seat of Wide Bay in 1990, he later held ministerial responsibilities covering agriculture and transport, among other areas, and retired from parliament in 2016. His route to national office began with district farming and council work, giving Kingaroy a connection based on practical local service as well as birthplace.

🌟 Matthew Hayden

Matthew Hayden was born in Kingaroy. The left-handed opening batter went on to represent Queensland and Australia, building a Test career known for forceful strokeplay. After struggling to establish himself in the 1990s, he scored 549 runs across three Tests in India in 2001, a turning point in his international career. His 380 against Zimbabwe in 2003 briefly held the world Test innings record. Kingaroy can claim the beginning of that biography without borrowing the other places where he grew up and developed his cricket.
